What's Happening in Schools?

Interested in seeing what kind of French language and cultural exercises your child is taking part in at school? Check out some of the videos and pictures below of classes doing exercises and activities from the K-2 Learning Experiences to Introduce French Language and Culture program. Each video features a learning experience that help to reinforce simple vocabulary, counting and other skills that will enrich your child's introduction to French language and culture.

Students Explain Rug Hooking
	Students at Montgomery Street Elementary School explain what they have learned about rug hooking with local artist Elizabeth Bastin. This supports the study of French culture in the grade 3 Learning Experiences to Introduce French language and culture.

Hooked Mats Can Tell A Story
	Local artist Elizabeth Bastin explains the significance of storytelling through hooked mats. She explains the rug shown in Claire’s Gift, a book all grade 3 students will hear as part of Learning Experiences to Introduce French language and culture.

Jackie Firlotte in Shediac
	Local educator, Jackie Firlotte, visits the Shediac area. This video will provide a virtual visit for Grade 3 students learning about areas of the province where French language is spoken.

Local fisherman explains the art of fishing scallop
	Local fisherman, Jean-Guy, explains the art of fishing. Students are learning about the importance of the fishing industry to the Acadian coast. They will explore this idea through a simple story, music and viewing this video.

La première pêche
	Local artist Art Richard visits Grade 3 at Douglas Elementary School and performs his song, La prèmiere pêche.

Musical exercise: Sept Sauts Simples
	Grade 3 students at Garden Creek elementary learn a French dance Sept Sauts Simples with physical education mentor, Heather Neilson.

Musical exercise: Kinderpolka
	Kindergarten students learn how to do the Kinderpolka in this fun exercise. In addition to learning simple vocabulary in French, students learn cross-curricular skills in music and dance by learning how to keep a rhythm, follow directions and perform simple dance steps.

Musical exercise: La Bastringue
	Grade one students enjoy exploring French culture through a traditional French dance, La Bastringue. In addition to learning simple vocabulary in French, students learn cross-curricular skills in physical education and music by following directions, using movement to follow rhythms, and learning to keep a steady beat.

Poetry Exercise: Un escargot dans mon chapeau
	In this video, Grade 1 students are introduced to a simple children's poem. Students repeat the poem in French, and are asked to identify the meaning of the words in French by drawing on their own experiences and clues in the text of the poem. The poem is as follows: Un escargot dans mon chapeau (A snail in my hat) Une coccinelle sur une échelle, (A ladybug on a ladder) Une araignée dans mon panier. (A spider in my basket)

Classroom interest centre about French language and culture
	A classroom teacher describes the French language and culture "interest centre" in her classroom, and the activities they will undertake as part of their introduction to French language and culture. Many of the exercises and activities the teacher describes are those your child may learn in their school too!

Musical Exercise: Marcher, Sauter et Compter
	A classroom teacher uses music and interactive gestures to reinforce counting in French with these Grade 1 students.

Art Richard - Les nouilles
	Art Richard, a performing artist from Dieppe, New Brunswick has visited many schools in New Brunswick. His lively renditions and interactive songs are engaging to students and teachers alike!

Art Richard - L'autobus jaune
	Art Richard, performs L'autobus jaune. This CD will be in all Kindergarten classes and designed activities address curriculum outcomes in English Language Arts, Music, and Social Studies (You and Your World).
