Perception Surveys - Overview

Each year in December, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development provides perception surveys to students in grades 4 through 12, and to parents and teachers of students in every grade (K-12). The surveys collect opinion data on various characteristics of the respondents' school, which relate to the school's effectiveness. Survey items are developed based on research on school effectiveness and student engagement.

Survey responses provide school staff and the Parent School Support Committee (PSSC) with data for making informed decisions as they plan school improvements. The survey results present a starting point for discussion on many aspects of school operations, relationships with and among students and parents, and teacher concerns. The responses give helpful information to your school district and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development for planning and customizing professional development for teachers and school administrators.

In 2010, we heard from 29,282 parents, 45,383 students, and 3,914 teachers province-wide.

Reports for the parent and student surveys have been prepared in two formats for each school. The detailed format shows the response distribution for each survey item. The comparison report allows you to compare your school’s results with the results at the district and provincial levels.
