St. John the Baptist / King Edward School - Perception Survey Summary

Each year, in December, the Department of Education provides perception surveys to students in Grades 4 through 12, and to parents and teachers of students in every grade (K-12). The surveys collect opinion data on various characteristics of the respondents’ school, which relate to the school’s effectiveness.

Survey items were developed based on research in school effectiveness. Survey responses provide school staff and the Parent School Support Committee (PSSC) with data for making informed decisions as they plan school improvements. Perception survey results provide a starting point for discussion on many aspects of school operations, relationships with and among students and parents, and teacher concerns.

Survey results provide helpful information as your school district plans professional development. Perception data is also used on a provincial basis for tracking several of the targets of the provincial education plan. In 2009, we heard from 31,921 parents, 46,071 students, and 4,281 teachers province wide.

The following charts provide a general overview of the survey results. Responses are summarized by topic (domain), and the average percentage of agreement (agree and strongly agree combined) for each domain is presented. Every school has detailed perception survey reports. You can look at your school’s detailed reports by visiting the link below. Results from the teacher perception survey are used by teachers, administrators and the PSSC for school-wide planning, customizing professional development, and increasing collaboration for teaching, assessment and improving the school environment.

  • Positive School Environment includes items related to belonging, safety, bullying, discipline, respect, having friends (students), feeling welcomed (parents) and conditions conducive to learning.
  • Teaching/Effective Instructional Practice includes items related to teaching and assessment practices and expectations for student learning.
  • Partnerships with Parents and the Community includes items related to communication with school, ease of contact with teachers and administrators, and support from school when there are concerns.
  • Learning consists of a number of skills which students can develop at school such as reading, writing, and working with others.
  • Supports for Learning includes access to computers, services to support learning, and home support for learning.
