A Message to Parents
New Brunswick's educators are working hard and making progress in improving our public education system. To keep moving forward, I am pleased to provide you with the 2008-2009 school achievement reports for the Anglophone Sector.
As part of our education plan, When kids come first, our goal is to build the best education system in Canada. In an effort to achieve this goal, we have set a number of targets for student achievement in literacy, numeracy, science and French as a second language.
To be the best in Canada, we need to provide accurate and reliable information to measure progress on the core subjects we want our children to learn.
In order to create a sense of urgency in meeting these targets, New Brunswick's public education system needs to update New Brunswickers on its progress. By finding out what works and reporting annually on progress at the provincial, district and school levels, we can celebrate and share our collective successes, and at the same time focus in on areas that need improvement. Publicly recognizing successes and opportunities for improvement will help to make the system more accountable.
I invite all New Brunswickers to join us in our effort to build the best education system in Canada, which will help create a self-sufficient New Brunswick.
Hon. Roland Haché
Minister of Education
Understanding the Results
The school achievement report will provide school-level data on provincial assessments. This section outlines the subjects and the grade levels assessed. It also outlines each assessment target that we have committed to achieve by 2013 as part of the provincial education plan, When kids come first.
Provincial Targets
Literacy - Reading and Writing:
- At Grades 2 and 4, 90% of students will reach or exceed the standard in their program of study.
- At Grades 7 and 9 (English), 85% of students will reach or exceed the standard.
- Passing the Grade 9 assessment is a graduation requirement. Students who do not reach the Grade 9 standard have opportunities for reassessment in Grades 10-12.
Mathematics:
- At Grade 5, 90% of students will reach or exceed the standard.
- At Grade 8, 85% of students will meet or exceed the provincial assessment standard.
- Grades 5 and 8 French Immersion students have the choice to take the assessment in French or English.
French Second Language - Oral proficiency:
- 70% of high school graduates will be able to function effectively in speaking their second official language.
