Holds and Interlibrary Loans

What if your public library doesn't have the book you want ?
Public libraries in New Brunswick operate as a networked system and share their resources as much as possible. If you find an item listed in the provincial public library catalogue Vision, that belongs to another library, you may ask the staff at your local public library to place a hold on it. Some conditions apply to this service; for example, you will not be able to place a hold on reference and audiovisual materials (videos, compact discs, etc.).
If a book is not available in a public library or a bookmobile in the province, the staff could then try to get you the book through the interlibrary loan service. Some fees may apply.
Rules of thumb when requesting material not available at your public library :
- Bring as much information about your request as you can.
For books: Author and title are essential. Publisher, publication date and ISBN (International Standard Book Number) are very helpful.
For magazine articles: Author and title of article, title of magazine, publication date and page numbers of article
- Be patient.
Depending on the availability of the requested item, the location of the lending library, and the postal system, there may be a delay before your request is fulfilled.
- Make reasonable requests.
Please make sure that your local library cannot supply similar materials before you request it.
- Do not expect to borrow a whole magazine
Be prepared to pay for photocopies of any articles you may need.
