FREDERICTON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ISSUE FOCUS OF NEW POLICE JOB

The Fredericton Police Department is creating a new full-time position for an officer to specifically deal with Fredericton's domestic violence issue.

The department is planning to install a full-time officer to a new position called "Intimate Partner Violence Coordinator". Fredericton police respond to about 500 domestic disturbance calls every year. Those who work with victims of domestic violence welcome the new position.

"It's an amazing monster. It can take over the whole city but with all of us working together we're beginning to recognize and make new links," said Dianne Power, executive director of Women in Transition House.

Power has spent years trying to help women living in violent situations. She said having one police officer dedicated to all domestic violence cases in the city will mean consistency.

"In approach and level of knowledge and comfort of all the officers who are dealing with it. But yes, it will be great to have one go-to person when we're dealing with cases," she said.

Coun. John MacDermid said domestic violence numbers speak for themselves. "The numbers reflect that we need, really, a specialized position within the police force to address it," he said. http://bit.ly/MbMd6P

Sexual Violence Prevention Facilitator Training, Fredericton, April 22-24 OR May 27-29, 2014 :  The Fredericton Sexual Assault Crisis Centre (FSACC) will be providing training this Spring on facilitating sexual violence prevention programs using The Empowerment Project (a toolkit used to train facilitators to deliver self-protection and assertiveness workshops to women and girls) and Man to Man (a toolkit for delivering workshops to men and boys about reducing sexual assault).  Participants can be community educators, teachers or guidance counsellors, or other service providers who work youth, young adults, or adults in the area of preventing sexual violence against women.   Cost: $100 (includes Toolkit). Sexual Violence Trauma Counselling Training, Fredericton, May 5-9, 2014 :  This is a 5-day training workshop designed to provide counsellors and therapists with in-depth, specialized training for working with women survivors of sexual violence. The workshop will present new research associated with counselling women survivors while drawing on the many years of experience found at the Fredericton Sexual Assault Crisis Centre. Distribution of Employed Workers, Selected Occupation Groups, N.B., 1987 and 2011 Working women in New Brunswick predominate in certain occupational groups and continue to be significantly underrepresented in a few others. In 2011 as in 1987, women predominated in health, administrative-clerical and sales and service occupations. There has been little improvement in the proportion of women in occupations related to trades, transportation and equipment operation and in occupations in the natural and applied sciences.

MARCH ON FREDERICTON

On a bitterly cold Monday in December, the White Ribbon Campaign held a March to raise awareness about men's violence against women in downtown Fredericton. With the motto “Stand Up, Speak Out”, the White Ribbon organization's goal is to bring together all genders and provide an opportunity for men to come together as a sign of solidarity with all the women in their life who experience violence, to end men's violence against women, and to create a new view on masculinity and ensure healthy relationships. And come together they did with 200 people (150 of them men) marching down Queen Street towards City Hall where they gathered for speeches from Mayor Brad Woodside, Lieutenant Governor Graydon Nicholas, Police Chief Leanne Fitch, all lead by former chief of police, Barry MacKnight.

As part of a Fredericton High School Social Action project, a survey of 50 of the participants was conducted in an attempt to determine the impact of being part of this White Ribbon March.

Of the 50 people surveyed, 28 men said it is very important to speak out about the issue, but only 14 said they would become more active in the issue. Nineteen women said it was very important to speak out however only 7 said they would. That's still 42% of all those surveyed who said they would be more active in addressing the issue in the future, and the same number said they learned more about men's violence against women after attending the March.

Through the findings in the survey, it is clear that the White Ribbon Committee's event was a major success in furthering the organizers' goal of creating a new view of masculinity and healthy relationships, considering it was the very first March in Fredericton. With all the support shown on December 9th, let's hope those people take White Ribbon's beliefs and spread them throughout the community to help create an equal future for all genders.

CAIRO WOMEN BRING MEN BACK ON THE RAILS

Nihal Saad Zaghloul is an Egyptian woman in her late twenties. Like other young women, she faces the daily risk of sexual harassment on the streets of Cairo. But Egypt's revolution made her realise that people can unite and that she can make a difference.

A trend of mob rapes has risen rapidly in Egypt as political stability and social security have diminished post-revolution. Together with a friend she founded an organization called Basma to raise awareness about  sexual harassment  in the streets of this metropolis of 30 million.

After gathering dozens of volunteers, they deployed on the streets around Tahrir Square and inside the downtown metro stations last year for the first time. Zaghloul deeply believes that everything starts with education – and she set out to educate.

“Our educational system is failing. Government schools perform poorly and private schools are too expensive. This keeps most of the Egyptian youth uneducated. And it is exactly this group that we find in the streets, bored with life, mistreating women.” Zaghloul argues.

Women in Egypt are often harassed by men and both sexes tend to take it as something normal. According to an April survey by U.N. Women, 99.3 percent of Egyptian women respondents said they had been sexually harassed.

But with Basma, Zaghloul started to fight this. Whenever they see a girl being harassed, she and her team of volunteers approach the young men or boys to sensitise them.

The first months were a struggle for the organization. The police, themselves often active participants in the harassment, did not take the initiative seriously and caused more problems, rather than offering support.

INVOQUER LA DÉTRESSE DES HOMMES POUR ÉVITER DE PARLER DE LA VIOLENCE MASCULINE

Au cours des derniers jours, les médias ont fait état de deux incidents troublants, survenus en Beauce et dans Lotbinière, lors desquels un homme aurait tué son ex-conjointe et un homme avec lequel cette femme aurait eu une relation amoureuse, en plus de tuer une de ses deux filles et de blesser gravement la seconde qui repose toujours dans un état critique. Par ailleurs, la façon dont les médias décrivent et analysent ces récents incidents nous choque et nous inquiète, comme c'est souvent le cas dans de telles situations. Encore une fois, plutôt que de nommer clairement le problème de la violence masculine, les journalistes et les commentateurs - tout comme les témoins, les proches et les «experts» qu'ils interrogent - parlent d'un «drame familial», d'un «conflit» ou d'un «triangle amoureux qui tourne au drame», et mettent l'accent sur la détresse, le suicide ou encore l'accès difficile aux services pour les hommes. Souvent, le mot «violence» n'est même pas mentionné.

La popularité du discours qui met ainsi l'accent sur la détresse des hommes est particulièrement inquiétante lorsque celui-ci contribue à minimiser ou à occulter le problème de la violence des hommes envers les femmes et, par le fait même, déresponsabilise les auteurs de cette violence. Subventions pour la prévention du crime dans les collectivités accepte actuellement les demandes de financement – L'Association de la prévention du crime du Nouveau-Brunswick accepte actuellement les demandes de financement sous le Programme de subvention de projet local de prévention du crime. Cette possibilité de financement revêt la forme d'une subvention pouvant atteindre 1000 $ offert aux collectivités admissibles et visant des initiatives de prévention du crime au Nouveau-Brunswick. 	Répartition des personnes occupant un emploi, selon les groupes de profession, N.-B., 1987 et 2011 La majorité des femmes occupant un emploi au Nouveau-Brunswick demeurent concentrées dans un nombre limité de catégories de professions, et sont sous représentées de façon importante dans plusieurs autres. En 2011, tout comme en 1987, les femmes travaillaient surtout dans les domaines de la santé, du soutien administratif et des ventes et services. On note peu d'amélioration dans la représentation des femmes dans les métiers, le transport et la machinerie, ni dans les occupations reliées aux sciences naturelles ou appliquées.

LA MARCHE SUR FREDERICTON

Par un lundi de décembre où il faisait un froid de canard, une marche dans le centre-ville de Fredericton a été tenue dans le cadre de la Campagne du ruban blanc en vue de sensibiliser la population à la violence des hommes envers les femmes. Ayant pour devise « Stand Up, Speak Out » (levez-vous et faites-vous entendre), la Campagne vise à regrouper toutes les personnes, peu importe leur sexe, en vue de donner aux hommes l'occasion de témoigner leur solidarité aux femmes dans leur vie victimes de violence, de mettre fin à la violence masculine à l'égard des femmes, ainsi que de changer la façon de voir la masculinité et d'assurer l'établissement de relations saines. La solidarité était au rendez-vous, puisque 200 personnes (dont 150 étaient des hommes) ont marché dans la rue Queen jusqu'à l'hôtel de ville, où le maire de Fredericton, Brad Woodside, le lieutenant-gouverneur du Nouveau-Brunswick, Graydon Nicholas, et la chef de la Force policière de Fredericton, Leanne Fitch, ont prononcé une allocution. L'ancien chef de police, Barry MacKnight, a agi à titre d'animateur.

Dans le cadre d'un projet de l'école Fredericton High School en matière d'action sociale, un sondage a été mené auprès de 50 personnes afin de déterminer l'incidence de leur participation à la Marche du ruban blanc.

Vingt-huit des hommes qui ont été sondés ont dit qu'il est très important de parler de ce problème, mais seulement quatorze d'entre eux ont affirmé vouloir prendre un rôle plus actif afin de le régler. Dix-neuf femmes ont répondu qu'il était très important de se faire entendre, mais seulement sept d'entre elles étaient disposées à le faire. Toujours est-il qu'une proportion de 42 % des personnes sondées a dit vouloir jouer un plus grand rôle pour résoudre le problème dans l'avenir et en avoir appris davantage sur la violence des hommes à l'égard des femmes en participant à la marche.

VIOLENCE À L'ENCONTRE DES FEMMES: UN PROBLÈME MONDIAL DE SANTÉ PUBLIQUE D'AMPLEUR ÉPIDÉMIQUE

De nouvelles lignes directrices cliniques et stratégiques sont publiées pour orienter l'action du secteur de la santé.

Genève - La violence physique ou sexuelle est un problème de santé publique qui touche plus d'un tiers des femmes dans le monde, selon un nouveau rapport publié par l'Organization mondiale de la Santé en partenariat avec la London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine et le Conseil sud-africain de la Recherche médicale.

Le rapport, intitulé Estimations mondiales et régionales de la violence à l'encontre des femmes: prévalence et conséquences sur la santé de la violence du partenaire intime et de la violence sexuelle exercée par d'autres que le partenaire est la première étude systématique jamais menée à partir de données mondiales sur la prévalence de la violence à l'encontre des femmes, que celle-ci soit le fait de leur partenaire ou d'autres personnes. L'étude relève également que la violence du partenaire intime est la forme la plus courante. Elle touche 30% des femmes à l'échelle mondiale.

Ce rapport souligne que tous les secteurs doivent collaborer pour éliminer toute tolérance à l'égard de la violence contre les femmes et mieux soutenir celles qui en sont victimes. De nouvelles lignes directrices de l'OMS, officiellement présentées en même temps que le rapport, visent à soutenir les pays désireux d'améliorer les moyens alloués au secteur de la santé dans ce domaine.

CANCER DU SEIN: LES MAMMOGRAPHIES NE SERAIENT PAS PLUS EFFICACES QU'UN EXAMEN MÉDICAL TRADITIONNEL

La pratique de mammographies annuelles ne permet pas de réduire la mortalité par cancer du sein, selon une étude canadienne qui relance la polémique autour de l'intérêt des campagnes de dépistage organisé.

Réalisée sur près de 90 000 femmes âgées de 40 à 59 ans, suivies pendant 25 ans, l'étude a montré que les femmes qui avaient subi des mammographies annuelles pendant cinq ans n'avaient pas moins de risque de mourir d'un cancer du sein que celles ayant seulement bénéficié d'un examen physique.

Au bout de 25 ans, 500 décès par cancer du sein étaient survenus chez les 44.925 femmes suivies par mammographies contre 505 décès chez les 44 910 femmes du groupe témoin.

Les femmes avaient été assignées dans les deux groupes par tirage au sort.

Les tumeurs du sein détectées étaient en revanche plus nombreuses dans le 1er groupe, soit 3.250 au total contre 3.133 dans le second à la fin de l'étude.

Le déséquilibre était déjà net au bout de cinq ans, avec 666 cancers détectés chez les femmes sous mammographies contre 524 dans le groupe témoin, soit un "excédent" de 142 tumeurs.

Cet "excédent" était encore de 106 tumeurs au bout de 15 ans, ce qui, selon les auteurs, "signifie que 22% des cancers diagnostiqués dans le premier groupe ont été surdiagnostiqués".

Les tumeurs étaient de surcroît plus petites (1,4 cm dans le premier groupe contre 2,1 cm dans le second) au moment du diagnostic. http://huff.to/LUGIJ7

On oublie trop souvent que c'est la misogynie qui a suscité le féminisme & non l'inverse. On oublie que, pendant les siècles des siècles, (la misogynie) a régné sans conteste, s'imposant d'abord par la force puis par l'usage & enfin par les lois qui consacrèrent un état de fait. On oublie qu'elle a su puiser sa justification dans la plupart des religions inventées par les hommes & le christianisme ne fait pas exception à la règle, qui aggravait l'infériorité physique & légale de la femme établie par le droit romain …, par le poids du péché originel. Depuis l'aube des temps notre civilisation occidentale, pour ne citer qu'elle, a fait de la femme une esclave à la fois dans sa personne & dans ses biens. Elle a été la première esclave, avant même que l'esclavage n'existe. Et elle l'est presque partout restée après l'abolition de l'esclavage.
