*Note: Although the term Maliseet is the one generally used for the First People of the St. John River Valley, Wolastoqiyik is becoming more common as it is their term for themselves.

According to the Indian Register System from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, as of December 31, 2008, there are approximately 13, 074 Aboriginal people living in New Brunswick, 8, 455 on reserve and 4, 619 off reserve.
