New Brunswick Adoption Foundation

The New Brunswick Adoption Foundation ('NBAF) provides the private sector, community groups and individuals a vehicle to promote the adoption of children in the permanent care of the Minister of Social Development.

NBAF is an incorporated not-for-profit organization.

NBAF was founded in March 2002 and was the first foundation of its kind in Canada.

NBAF is funded through donations, support from the Province of New Brunswick and in-kind support from individuals and corporations who share the Foundation’s vision.

MISSION STATEMENT
  • To promote permanency as a goal for all children in care.
  • To give adoption a high priority on the public agenda through media advertisements, poster placements, public seminars and speaking engagements.
  • To raise public awareness about adoption through education and communication.
  • To maintain a volunteer Board of Directors who are committed to the vision.
  • To act as a vehicle for a private sector –community partnership.
FACTS
  • The NBAF believes that every child deserves a permanent, secure and loving family.
  • Research and experience have demonstrated that adoption is considered to be potentially the most successful and cost-effective way of meeting longterm social and psychological needs of children with permanent guardianship status.
  • At present there are several hundred children in the permanent care of the Minister of Social Development with this number increasing by as many as 100 children every year.
  • Many of the children have special needs, like a brother and sister who would like to stay together. Some have different cultural backgrounds, some are emotionally and physically fragile, and some were exposed to drugs or alcohol in-utero.
  • These children range in age from 2 to teenage years. Many are aged 12 and older.
IMPACT – PLACEMENT INCREASE

Prior to our inception in 2002, an average of 25 children were placed per year. Since 2002 the adoption rate has soared by as much as 400% with 100 children adopted on average annually. Since 2002 hundreds of New Brunswick children have found forever families.

Certainly an achievement any business would be proud to achieve.

Our efforts to continue spreading the word depend entirely on support received by our Foundation for this specific purpose. Therefore, we must pursue even more diligently the message we strive to deliver.

The Honourable Erminie J. Cohen Legacy Fund for Adoption

In 2007, the Honourable Erminie J. Cohen Legacy Fund for Adoption was established to ensure the long term sustainability of the New Brunswick Adoption Foundation and in turn ensure the message of the Foundation lives on into the future. The unfortunate reality is that even though many homes have been found there are more and more children entering the system each year. Your donation to the “The Honourable Erminie J. Cohen Legacy Fund for Adoption” will help to ensure this important voice for children continues..
