The MacDonald Centre offers a unique training program with opportunities for persons with physical disabilities to learn independent living and life skills in preparation for them to eventually move to the community. Participants in the program occupy an apartment during their stay at the Centre. They work with a team of professionals namely, a Home Economist, a Social Worker, an Occupational Therapist and a Manager of Client Care Services.

These professionals provide training in areas including but not limited to, Home Care, Meal Preparation, Money Management, Social Skills, Recreation and the ability to direct Client Care Services. The program is set for a period of three years, but this may vary depending on the needs of the participants. There are 34 program apartments. We also offer 9 permanent housing units to persons with physical disabilities requiring high levels of attendant care. Monthly fee is $160.00.

MEALS ON WHEELS
Meals on Wheels is a service which delivers full course meals to people who are not able to prepare their own meals.

The Home Support Services Meals on Wheels offers two different programs:

  • A hot meals program for clients in St. Stephen available 7 days per week and to clients on Grand Manan 5 days per week.

After being offered admission, they must provide a complete psycho-educational assessment done within the past two years. There must be clear and specific evidence and identification of a learning disability. They must also complete a Supplemental Application Form available from Student Services.

Metro Health Services Inc. provides professional assessment, on-site manufacturing and patient education for persons requiring prosthetic or orthotic devices, specialty wheelchair systems, or orthopedic footwear and custom foot orthotics. Metro offers clients assistance in accessing appropriate funding resources and providing documentation for insurance benefits.

There are staff and volunteers available to visit schools and businesses, to conduct workshops and do presentations. Services available in English although the receptionist is able to assist in both official languages.

The Mira Atlantic Foundation is a school  which provide free of charge guide dogs to blind individuals, service dogs to persons in wheelchairs and to autistic children.  It offers mobility courses to participants with follow-up every six months.  Teens must understand that the dogs are not pets but are working dogs.  Mira is the only school in the world to give guide dogs to blind people of less than 15 of age.

This Association is interested in all programs and services pertaining to persons with disabilities such as transportation, accessibility, legislation, and housing. The Association has a loan cupboard consisting of technical aids available at no charge. Office hours are Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Appointments for Monday accepted.


They are also responsible for the operation of the Miramichi Accessible Transit (MAT) bus.  Website is www.matbus.ca. Two accessible buses are available for persons with physical or mental disabilities (including seniors) and one is available for walk-on passengers in the Miramichi area to a 10 to 12 mile radius. Available Monday to Thursday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

This organization provides residential services to people who have a developmental challenge. The support services range from rotating staffed group homes for people with complex and multiple needs to regular visits by a counsellor for people living independently in their own apartment.
