In New Brunswick, as in the rest of Canada, people are protected by law from many types of discrimination.  This law is the New Brunswick Human Rights Act.  The New Brunswick Human Rights Commission enforces that law.  It promotes equality and investigates and tries to settle complaints of discrimination and harassment.  If a complaint cannot be settled, a human rights tribunal can hear the evidence.  If it decides that there was discrimination, it can issue orders to correct it.

The Human Rights Act is a provincial law that prohibits discrimination and harassment in:

  1. employment
  2. housing
  3. public services, for example schools, stores, motels, hospitals, police and most government services
  4. publicity
  5. certain associations

The grounds of prohibited discrimination are:

  1. race
  2. colour
  3. national origin
  4. place of origin
  5. ancestry
  6. religion
  7. age
  8. marital status
  9. sex
  10. sexual orientation
  11. physical or mental disability
  12. social condition, which includes source of income, level of education and occupation
  13. political belief or activity

If you think you are being discriminated against or harassed based on the prohibited grounds listed above you can file a complaint with the Human Rights Commission. You do not need to be a citizen or landed immigrant. It does not cost anything, and it is illegal for someone to penalize you because you file a complaint.

The Association has several programs that have and will make a difference to all New Brunswickers and hopefully all Canadians. Our asthma camp for Anglophone and Francophone children, ages 7-11, has provided valuable data and information which has made a noticeable positive impact on the participating children and families.

Children who attend the camps are taught skills that will assist them to better manage and control their asthma. Most importantly, it allows the children an opportunity to have fun, and establish healthy relationships with their peers and health professionals.

The Association offers public education on an ongoing basis. The public is encouraged to call the Association and receive on-line education and free resource tools as a means to increase their understanding and knowledge about proper care and management of their or their child's asthma. The Association delivers asthma education to schools for both administration and students, seminars on respiratory diseases, and conferences for health professionals. Respiratory equipment for patients is available on a loan basis.
