PALLIATIVE CARE/HOSPICES PARKINSON SOCIETY MARITIME REGION The Parkinson Society Maritime Region represents 8,400 people living in NB, NS and PEI. Its primary focus is the promotion of support services and education programs to people living with Parkinson’s, their families, caregivers, health care professionals and other interested parties. The Region also supports the National Research Program of the Parkinson Society Maritime Region. The Region funds the Maritime Parkinson Clinic located at Dalhousie University. Services provided include a toll-free information and support line, an extensive Resource Centre, annual conference and workshops. At the community level programs such as exercise classes, massage therapy, and speech therapy may be offered. Parkinson Express is published monthly in electronic format with up-to-date information of research, treatments and activities in the Maritimes. Chapters/Support Groups are located throughout the Maritimes, including 8 of them in New Brunswick (Fredericton, Grand Lake/Minto, Greater Miramichi, Greater Moncton, Restigouche Region/Campbellton, River Valley/Woodstock, Saint John and Sussex Valley). PAVILLON ST-JÉRÔME The Pavillon St-Jérôme residential service is a non-profit organization serving adults with a mental disability of the Acadian Peninsula area. The residents of the community residence receive necessary services to become more independent and better integrated in the community. Services available in English and French. PBC (PRIMARY BILIARY CIRRHOSIS) SATELLITE SUPPORT GROUP
A PBC satellite support group for N. B. offers information, direction, ongoing support and education to patients and their families affected by primary biliary cirrhosis. This group lives relatively close to each other and wants to share, close to home, emotional, social and practical support with others affected by PBC. Members are able to obtain more information about PBC, its effect on lifestyle and coping strategies and to keep abreast of new treatments, medication and research. A newsletter is published bi-monthly and they are affiliated with the Canadian Liver Foundation. PHARE DES SERVICES COMMUNAUTAIRES INC. (LE) Le Phare des Services Communautaires Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides services to the Kent County population. Its mission is to ensure social and community services to people with special needs (children, adults, seniors) allowing them to live in dignity, to grow as human beings and to participate in the life of their community. A society where individuals are respected and valued for everything that defines them and where their well-being can benefit from essential services is Le Phare's new vision. The services offered are presently separated into five different programs: The Residential Program for all persons with special needs (adults) emphasizes on family life, community integration and to assure one’s growth and development according to his or her potential. The Residential Program (Myosotis) is destined for seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, who can no longer stay at their residence. The Home Support Program coordinates the different requests for home support for people with special needs, with mental health problems, in rehabilitation or who are losing their autonomy. The program also offers relief for ageing parents by taking care of their children with special needs. The Early Intervention Program (ages 0 – 5 years old) provides at home services to parents of preschool children who have special needs, learning difficulties, slow development or who are at risk due to certain environmental factors, who need help and/or information concerning the development of their child and/or their role as parent. An Activity Centre (sense of belonging and learning) is now available to offer projects aimed at personal development, whether learning, social or working activities, incorporating a philosophy of community inclusion. PREMIER'S COUNCIL ON THE STATUS OF DISABLED PERSONS The Premier’s Council on the Status of Disabled Persons was created by legislation to advise the provincial government on matters relating to the status of persons with disabilities. It reports directly to the Premier of New Brunswick but has access to all ministers and government departments. The Council's definition of persons with disabilities is broad enough to cover all types of disabilities and allows it to look at all aspects of problems involving persons with disabilities. The Council offers information and assistance to individuals or groups on any topic related to persons with disabilities and can act as an intervener in unusual individual situations. The Council receives briefs and suggestions from individuals and groups, and undertakes research on matters relating to persons with disabilities. It recommends programs and proposes legislation, policies and practices to improve the status of persons with disabilities. The Council maintains information on topics of interest to persons with disabilities. It distributes a various disability related information and numerous directories in English and French. Council information is available in alternate formats upon request. PRENATAL DIAGNOSIS AND GENETIC CLINC Contact: Dr. F. Sanderson Contact: Dr. D Colford The department offers preconception and prenatal diagnosis counseling to people with a history of genetic problems or an increased risk of having a child with a disability. Where appropriate, a full range of prenatal screening and diagnostic services are available, including genetic amniocentesis and detailed prenatal ultrasound examination. The person must be referred by a physician. PUBLIC LEGAL EDUCATION AND INFORMATION SERVICE OF N.B.
PLEIS-NB is a non-profit organization and a registered charity. The mandate is to develop a variety of bilingual educational products and services about the law for the public in order to promote access to the legal system. The goal is to assist the public in identifying and understanding their legal rights and responsibilities with a view to improving their ability to deal with legal matters. They operate a toll-free family law information line, which also provides registration for the free course “For the Sake of the Children” (parenting after separation) at 1 (888) 236-2444 as well as a website dedicated to information on family law www.familylawnb.ca.
