St. Joseph’s Community Health Centre works in partnership with the community, offering skills and resources to help improve health among individuals and families and build a healthy community. We offer a wide variety of health services through a health team that includes physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, a pharmacist, occupational therapist, dieticians and social workers. Computer access centre staff can assist with a search for information concerning life skills, life balance, health issues, employment, healthy parenting and other issues related to wellness.Staff at SJCHC are involved in initiatives that respond to community needs, such as tobacco reduction, healthy lifestyles, arthritis management, promotion of mental wellness, and promotion of healthy personal and family life. SAINT JOHN ABILITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE Jeff Sparks The Saint John Ability Advisory Committee is a committee of Common Council who addresses issues and concerns relating to persons with disabilities. SAINT JOHN ASSOCIATION OF THE DEAF This association consists of a social and recreational club for deaf adults and children who use manual sign language. Members get together for parties, bingo (once a month), meetings and special events. SAINT JOHN CANADA GAMES AQUATIC CENTRE The Canada Games Aquatic Centre provides opportunities for facility usage, leisure swimming and learn-to-swim for special needs groups and individuals. Call their Centre staff for advice on available opportunities and placements. SAINT JOHN DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING SERVICES INC. Saint John Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Inc. offers services designed to create equal opportunity and accessibility to Deaf and hard of hearing people. The agency's goal is to enable Deaf, hard of hearing and deafened people to live independent, productive lives with full access to the services and opportunities available to the hearing population. In order to accomplish this, we act as a link between the Deaf and hearing communities, providing the hearing community with information about deafness and related issues and providing the Deaf community with access to services and information. Saint John Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Inc. works closely with existing agencies, making their services more accessible to the Deaf and hard of hearing population. Some of the services offered by this group are : interpreter services, information/referral, Hard of Hearing Self Help Group, information regarding technical devices, sign language class, heritage program, life skills, etc. The William Anderson Memorial scholarship program is available through the Saint John Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services for Manual Deaf Consumers living in South-Western New Brunswick. Saint John Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Inc. now have employment services for the Fredericton Region called “Fredericton Works”. This support group serves those with Sarcoidosis in the Saint John area. Literature and information on Sarcoidosis is available as well as a volunteer who can make appearances at groups meetings. SCHIZOPHRENIA SOCIETY OF CANADA Formed in 1979, the Schizophrenia Society of Canada (SSC) is a national registered charity. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for those affected by schizophrenia and psychosis through education, support programs, public policy and research. There are 10 provincial societies and over 100 chapters and branches, to help people with mental health issues and psychosis and their families have a better quality of life while we search for a cure. SSC is committed to: raising awareness and education to the public, to help reduce stigma and discrimination, supporting families and individuals, advocating for legislative change and improved treatment and services, supporting research through the SSC Foundation and other independent efforts. SCOUTS CANADA Provides opportunities to help youth and young people, 5 to 26 years of age, to develop as resourceful and responsible members of the community. Programs are offered to children with physical disabilities, children with a mild or moderate mental or emotional disability, children with speech impediments or learning disabilities. Outdoor activities, leadership skills, life-skills training and group meetings are part of scouting fun and adventure. Services available in English. SENIORS' INFORMATION CENTRE Seniors’ Information Centre helps seniors and their families navigate through the various public services and programs, and helps seniors continue to be self-sufficient and independent. The Centre will provide you with up-to-date information pertaining to health care, chronic disease, injuries, housing, finances, legal matters, assistance with addressing end-of-life questions and other concerns. They also offer a variety of education and information session pertinent to the older adult population. Examples include Wills & Power of Attorney, Heart Heath, Diet & Nutrition, Wellness Workshops and the recently launched “Seniors’ Safety Academy”. Their services are available to everyone; they are located in an accessible office and have TTY. SENIORS' OUTREACH CENTER
The Seniors Outreach Program is a day program for seniors living in the greater Saint John community. The Center is designed to meet the needs of seniors who may require motivational, social, and therapeutic activities; companionship if they are socially isolated or lonely; and programs/services for seniors who are physically disabled or suffering with mild to moderate memory impairments. As well, the Center provides relief in the caregiver role in a safe, warm and caring environment. The Center offers a blend of health, social and recreational programming, and senior’s benefits from the program as it provides motivational activities while maintaining or restoring their physical or emotional functioning. A wide variety of pamphlets are available on such diverse topics as housing, home care, health conditions, government programs, nutrition, finances, recreation, etc. We maintain a display and short-term loan of assistive devices for daily living activities. Through CRA we complete income tax returns to low income seniors at no cost. We partner with the Department of Leisure Services in operating the annual 50+ Friendship Games. Services communautaires de l'ARC Inc. is an organization whose goal is to assist persons from the Acadieville, Rogersville and Collette, (ARC) region, who have a disability to improve their quality of life. When a child must travel to the Shrine Hospital in Montreal, the Shrine Hospital in Boston, which specializes in burns, or to their Outreach Clinics at Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst, all costs including accommodations are paid by Shriners. The expense to operate and maintain Shrine Hospitals and provide world-class research and medical care comes from the Shriners. Luxor Shriners provide this care free to over 500 children and their families in New Brunswick without any government funding. The Sensory Motor Instructional Leadership Experience is a unique community service program offered to children with special needs. The program is open to any child between the ages of 5 and 13 with special needs. The volunteers are motivated students from the School of Nursing & School of Kinesiology and Recreation, at the University of Moncton. The program seeks to improve the "total development" of children with special needs by enhancing vital physical and motor skills and patterns. In addition, the program stresses the improvement of self-esteem by strengthening the emotional-social aspects of a child's personality through success at play. To achieve the goals of each child's individual educational plan, experiences include water orientation for all children and physical activities in the gymnasium. The program includes 10 sessions of 2 hours (once a week), starting in January and finishing in April. Registration takes place annually in November at the City of Moncton, Recreation, Parks, Tourism and Culture, City Hall and the Volunteer Centre of Southeastern New Brunswick, 236 St. George Street, Moncton. Services are available in English and French. SOUTHAMPTON HOUSE INC. Southampton House Inc., is a community-based residence for adult persons living with brain injury. Care and services are provided in a safe environment with the intention that everyday needs are met and each individual lives a full life with dignity and respect. SOUTH-EAST DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING SERVICES INC. The South-East Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services Inc. offers services, programs and advocacy for persons who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Services include Sign Language interpreting, counseling, referrals, direction and support, assistance, information on job search techniques, resumes, public awareness seminars and workshops, courses in sign language (ASL), information and assistance in accessing government funded services and programs. SPECIAL OLYMPICS N.B. Special Olympics New Brunswick is a not-for-profit organization that provides sport competition and training for people with intellectual disabilities. These programs operate on an ongoing year round basis within various communities throughout the province in two main categories: Competitive Sport Training and Community Sport Training. Programs are provided by certified coaches and trained volunteers. Special Olympics New Brunswick is an Accredited Chapter of Special Olympics Canada and therefore offers the opportunities to compete at the Local, Provincial, National and International level. Special Olympics New Brunswick offers programs in 16 different sports: floor hockey, bowling (5 pin, 10 pin and candlepin), swimming, nordic skiing, curling, skating (speed and figure), track and field, softball, snowshoeing, basketball, soccer, bocce, and golf. SPINA BIFIDA & HYDROCEPHALUS ASSOCIATION OF CANADA
Our mission is to improve the quality of life of all individuals with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus and their families, through awareness, education, research and advocacy, and to reduce the incidence of neural tube defects. STAN CASSIDY CENTRE FOR REHABILITATION The Rehabilitation Centre is the designated tertiary neurological Rehabilitative Centre in the Province of New Brunswick. The environment and activities of the Rehabilitation Centre are geared solely towards maximizing independence and self-care for the individual. A comprehensive range of services are integrated into an individually tailored program for each person. Persons may be admitted on an inpatient or outpatient basis. Services Offered :
Specialty Teams and Clinics : To fulfill its specialty role, individual teams and treatment protocols have been developed for each of the following disabilities :
Average Length of Stay : The length of time a patient stays as an inpatient varies, depending upon the nature of the disability and the patient's motivation to respond. The average stay is 50 days. When a plateau is reached, the patient is normally discharged. Cost to the Patient : The Rehabilitation Centre is a publicly-funded New Brunswick hospital. Care and treatment are provided without direct cost to each patient. Assistance in funding special equipment needed by the patient is available upon request. Admission Procedure : Any licensed physician may refer a patient to the Centre for assessment and/or treatment. Inpatient and outpatient referral forms are available for this purpose. The treatment team screens all referrals and advise the physician and patient accordingly. Discharge Planning : Discharge planning begins the moment the person is admitted to the Rehabilitation Centre. Involvement of the family, physician and community agencies is encouraged throughout the rehabilitation program. They play an important role in the rehabilitation plan. The referring physician and other authorized persons will receive a written report following discharge of the patient. STUDENT ACCESSIBILITY CENTRE The Student Accessibility Centre exists to provide services to support students with disabilities, both visible and non-visible, during their academic experience at UNB.
