Introduction

Ensuring that New Brunswick has the health professionals it needs, when it needs them, is an important aspect of the Provincial Health Plan, Healthy Futures.

A variety of professionals are required to keep our health care system operating. Pharmacists, rehabilitation therapists, technologists and many others are all part of the “health care team.”

Below are some of the resource strategies being used to focus on topics such as recruitment, retention and leadership skills.

NB Clinical Education Program

Student Clinical Placements

Through the NB Clinical Education Program, students studying in the “out-of-province” rehabilitation programs of Audiology, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech Language Pathology, have been returning to New Brunswick to complete their student clinical placement in New Brunswick health care settings. Recently, the Program expanded to include Pharmacy students.

Continuing Education

Through the NB Clinical Education Program, audiologists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, physiotherapists and speech language pathologists can have access to continuing education through the utilization of funding allocated to their respective service for clinical placements. Accessing teaching materials and supplies as well as new technologies is another option in using allocated funds.

Active participation in student supervision also enables therapists to actively network with university partners.

Education and Training

Access to education and training for high needs health occupations within “out-of-province” educational institutions is possible given formal training seats agreements.

New programs have either been implemented and/or are currently being developed within “in-province” post-secondary institutions to meet identified needs.

Residency Programs

Currently New Brunswick offers excellent residency programs for dieticians, pharmacists and psychologists.

Provincial Student Registry

Once a student becomes a participant of the Provincial Student Registry, their personal information is captured in a provincial database with several objectives in mind: identifying where and in which health care programs New Brunswick residents are studying; when students will be graduating and be available for employment; and how to best reach them for recruitment purposes.

Students are invited to complete the Registry form via various means:

• the NB Career Days activity whereby the Department of Health and each Regional Health Authority visit health care students in Halifax, St. John’s, Sherbrooke, Ottawa, Montréal and Québec studying in University, College and Cégep programs;
• the NB Clinical Education Program student clinical placement process; and
• adhoc participation to career fairs.

Annual NB Career Days

In 2003, a new recruitment strategy, the Annual NB Career Days, was implemented as a partnership
between the dedicated physician, nursing and allied health professionals’ advisors and recruiters
employed by the eight Regional Health Authorities. Under this program, recruiters visit and meet with
New Brunswick students enrolled in health education programs in New Brunswick and in other
provinces.

Discussions are currently under way with employers to develop a fair equitable process for this new retention incentive.
