Cancer Prevention and Screening

Prevention and screening are important tools in reducing the burden of cancer. Screening is the early detection of cancer or pre-cancerous conditions in individuals that do not have symptoms of cancer. In Canada, scientific evidence supports population-based cancer screening programs for three types of cancers: breast, cervical, and colorectal.

Experts agree that at least 50% of cases and deaths can be prevented by healthier life choices. Visit the following websites to get more information on prevention initiatives:

New Brunswick Breast Cancer Screening Program

Established in 1995, this program is offered through each Regional Health Authority in the province. There are 16 breast cancer screening sites throughout N.B.

Important Breast Cancer Screening Information

Women between the ages of 50 and 69 have a higher risk of getting breast cancer
Regular breast cancer screening examinations (every two years) for these women can help detect breast cancers early and reduce mortality
Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst women in New Brunswick
- over 500 are diagnosed each year
About 130 NB women die from breast cancer each year - second only to lung cancer

Access

Who can access the New Brunswick Breast Cancer Screening Program?

Women residing in NB who are 50 - 69 years of age and have no signs or symptoms of breast cancer or previous diagnosis of breast cancer can self-refer to breast cancer screening by contacting one of the screening sites.

Women residing in NB who are between 40 - 49 or over 69 years of age and have no signs or symptoms of breast cancer or previous diagnosis of breast cancer require a referral from a doctor or nurse practitioner.
