Atlantic Canada Co-operation (Section)

Within the Federal Provincial, US Relations Division of the Department, there is a commitment and responsibility for New Brunswick’s participation in Atlantic Cooperation Initiatives. The Province of New Brunswick is strongly committed to working closely with the other three Atlantic Provinces on policies and initiatives that a) increase the efficiency and quality of government services to the citizens of New Brunswick; and b) enhance the economic competitiveness of the Province and the region as a whole.

The formation of the Council of Atlantic Premiers (CAP) in May 2000 both formalized and strengthened the existing working relationship within the region. Through CAP, Premiers are committed to voicing the Atlantic Canadian perspective on fundamental national issues and work to ensure that Atlantic Canadians and their interests are well represented in national debates.

The work of the Council of Atlantic Premiers builds on the past and ongoing work of the Council of Maritime Premiers, which has been in existence for more than 25 years. All provinces, through the work of the Council, are committed to developing a climate in which Atlantic Canadians can fully participate and be competitive in the global economy, benefit from quality social services, and continue to enjoy the quality of life and environment that is unique to this region.

At the November 2001 Council of Atlantic Premiers’ Meeting, held in St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Premiers launched Working Together for Atlantic Canada, which sets out the Atlantic regional co-operation agenda for the next two years. The Action Plan focuses on two priority areas: improved quality and efficiency of government services in health, education and skills development, and protection of the region's environment; and, stronger competitiveness through reduced barriers to business, expanded research and development and energy capabilities, and promotion of the region in the global marketplace.

The plan is a working document that will evolve over time. In addition to the details outlined in the plan, the Atlantic Premiers will continue to explore new avenues of government-to-government co-operation, and pursue co-operation opportunities with the private sector. Premier Bernard Lord is a champion of regional initiatives focused on reducing business barriers in the Atlantic region.
