Richibucto Formation


Erosive base of grey channel sandstone and channel lag conglomerate cutting into red mudrocks with rooted zone at top. Richibucto Formation, Northumberland Strait near Cap Pel.

Salisbury Formation


Thick red channel sandstones showing development of large ball and pillow structures due to compaction and dewatering of underlying thinly laminated siltstone and mudstone. Salisbury Formation near Sackville.  

Minto Formation


Upper Carboniferous Minto Formation, basal rounded quartz pebble and cobble conglomerate exposed in an abandoned quarry northwest of Fredericton. Upper Carboniferous Minto Formation, grey competent clast conglomerate representative of the basal bed of typical fining-upward fluvial cycles. Exposure is along Highway 2 near Longs Creek. Upper Carboniferous Minto Formation, grey multi-channel fluvial sandstone sequences. Exposure is along Highway 2 near Longs Creek. Upper Carboniferous Minto Formation, grey cross-bedded channel pebbly sandstone and sandstone in the upper part of photo overlying reddish-brown interfluvial mudstone in the lower part of photo. Exposure is along Coal Creek east of Chipman.

Upper Carboniferous Boss Point Formation, grey quartzose sandstone overlain by quartz pebble conglomerate exposed near Edgetts Landing. Upper Carboniferous Boss Point Formation, pinkish grey parallel-laminated and flat-bedded fluvial sandstone exposed at Herring Cove in Fundy National Park. Upper Carboniferous Boss Point Formation, Wards Point Member, grey, fine-grained ripple-laminated fluvial sandstone exposed at Cape Enrag.

Mabou Group


Royal Road Basalt


Lower Carboniferous Royal Road Basalt in lower part of photo unconformably capped by Upper Carboniferous Minto Formation cream-coloured quartz pebble conglomerate. Exposure is in an abandoned quarry northwest of Fredericton. Lower Carboniferous Royal Road Basalt with elliptical, spherical and irregular amygdules of calcite and hematite. Exposure is in an abandoned quarry northwest of Fredericton.

Shin Formation


Lower Carboniferous Shin Formation, reddish-brown polymictic conglomerate and pebbly sandstone exposed along Highway 2 near Longs Creek. Lower Carboniferous Shin Formation, channel sandstone in the central part of photo with interchannel mudstones and calcrete-bearing mudstones above and below. Lower Carboniferous Shin Formation polymictic conglomerate in the lower part of photo overlain by Upper Carboniferous Minto Formation cream-coloured quartzose pebbly sandstone. There is glacial gravel above the Minto bed. Exposure is from near McGivney. Lower Carboniferous Shin Formation redbeds in lower left overlain by massive columnar basalt of the Lower Carboniferous Royal Road Basalt. Exposure is from Currie Mountain near Fredericton.

Hopewell Cape Formation


Lower Carboniferous Hopewell Cape Formation, maroon to red cross-bedded and flat-bedded polymictic fluvial conglomerates and lithic sandstones exposed at Dorchester Cape. Lower Carboniferous Hopewell Cape Formation, Dorchester Cape Member, mature bedded to nodular light grey calcrete in host red mudstones and siltstones at Dorchester Cape. Lower Carboniferous Hopewell Cape Formation, poorly sorted pebble and cobble polymictic fluvial conglomerate exposed at Hopewell Rocks.

Enrage Formation


Lower Carboniferous Enrag Formation, red, friable, cross-bedded, granular and coarse-grained lithic fluvial sandstones exposed at Marys Cove.

Shepody Formation


Lower Carboniferous Shepody Formation, light pink to grey cross-bedded fluvial quartzose sandstone exposed at Marys Cove.

Maringouin Formation


Lower Carboniferous Maringouin Formation, red crumbly pedogenic mudstone exposed at Cape Enrag.

Lower Carboniferous Macumber Formation, parallel-laminated packstone (limestone) with bedding-parallel and rare cross-cutting dark grey stylolites. Sample is from an exposure near Edgetts Landing. Lower Carboniferous Macumber Formation, parallel-laminated and flat-bedded limestone from an exposure near Edgetts Landing. Lower Carboniferous Macumber Formation, recumbent fold (slump or tectonic?) in parallel-bedded limestone exposed near Sussex Corner.

Hillsborough Formation


Lower Carboniferous Hillsborough Formation red to grey polymictic conglomerate in lower part of photo overlain by cream-coloured to grey flat bedded limestone of the Macumber Formation in the upper part of photo. Exposure in near Hillsborough. Lower Carboniferous Hillsborough Formation, red polymictic angular pebble and cobble proximal conglomerate exposed near Prosser Brook.

Mill Brook Formation


Lower Carboniferous Mill Brook Formation, polymictic poorly sorted pebble and cobble conglomerate in upper part of photo channeled into pebbly mudstone in the lower part of photo. Exposure is along Trout Creek east of Sussex.

Dutch Valley Formation


Lower Carboniferous Dutch Valley Formation, red massive mudstone (paleosol) with incipient cream-coloured caliche nodules.

Ridge Brook Formation

Lower Carboniferous Weldon Formation, overturned section of red siltstone and ripple-laminated sandstone along Salt Springs Brook near Petitcodiac.

Round Hill Formation


Lower Carboniferous Round Hill Formation, greenish grey poorly sorted polymictic pebble and cobble (debris flow?) conglomerate exposed on east side of Petitcodiac River near Boudreau Village. Lower Carboniferous Round Hill Formation, angular pebble and cobble polymictic conglomerate heavily impregnated with copper mineralization (malachite). Exposure is near Goshen. Lower Carboniferous Round Hill Formation, reddish-brown polymictic conglomerate and granular lithic sandstone exposed along Peck Creek. Lower Carboniferous Round Hill Formation, angular pebble and cobble polymictic conglomerate heavily impregnated with copper mineralization (malachite). Exposure is near Goshen.

Bloomfield Formation


Lower Carboniferous Bloomfield Formation, red friable polymictic pebble conglomerate and granular sandstone exposed along Mill Brook near Berwick. Lower Carboniferous Bloomfield Formation, pink to grey small pebble to granular polymictic conglomerate exposed in rock quarry near Bloomfield. Lower Carboniferous Bloomfield Formation, parallel-laminated and climbing ripple-laminated fluvial sandstones exposed in rock quarry near Bloomfield. Lower Carboniferous Bloomfield Formation, repetitive fining-upward cycles of fluvial grey sandstone and reddish-brown siltstones and mudstones exposed in rock quarry near Bloomfield.

Albert Formation


Lower Carboniferous Albert Formation, Dawson Settlement Member, cross-stratified sandstone interpreted as shallow lake deposits exposed along Parlee Brook south of Sussex. Lower Carboniferous Albert Formation, Frederick Brook Member, syn-sedimentary or early dislocation surfaces and open fold in dolomitic and kerogenous laminated mudstone exposed along Highway 1 southwest of Sussex. Lower Carboniferous Albert Formation, Frederick Brook Member, syn-sedimentary or early dislocation surfaces and complex folds in dolomitic and kerogenous laminated mudstone exposed along Highway 1 southwest of Sussex. Lower Carboniferous Albert Formation, Hiram Brook Member, wave ripple-laminated sandstone and dark grey mudstone representing shallow lake deposits. Lower Carboniferous Albert Formation, Hiram Brook Member, interbedded dark grey lacustrine shale and light grey lacustrine margin sandstones that are analogous of the gas-bearing sands in the McCully Field near Sussex. Lower Carboniferous Albert Formation, Hiram Brook Member, interbedded dark grey lacustrine shale and light grey lacustrine margin sandstones exposed along Highway 1 southwest of Sussex.

Memramcook Formation


Upper Devonian/Lower Carboniferous Memramcook Formation, fining-upward fluvial cycles of grey pebbly sandstone and finer-grained sandstone and reddish-brown mudstone. Exposure is along Stony Creek near Memramcook.

Potash Facilities


The PCS (NB) mine/mill facility is on the north side of Highway 2, about 5 km east of Sussex. The Potash ship-loading terminal at the Port of Saint John. The PCS (Cassidy Lake) processing operation is situated about 25 km southwest of Sussex.
