Interested in a Career in translation or interpretation?

The global economy, new information and communications technologies have revolutionized our lives. In New Brunswick, in Canada, and around the world, skilled translators and interpreters are in great demand.

If you are a person trying to decide on a career, you know there is an array of choices these days. The chances are you have already explored at least a few of them. Have you ever considered translation or interpretation? Employers in New Brunswick and across Canada are having a tough time finding the qualified translators and interpreters they need.

How can you tell whether you are qualified to become a translator or interpreter? Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Am I a reader?
If you read constantly for enjoyment as well as information, you probably have the first basic aptitude of a translator or interpreter, which is a love of language and an appreciation of the subtleties of each language.
  2. Am I a natural detective?
If you ask a lot of questions and enjoy tracking down the answers, you probably have aptitude for research, which makes up a large part of the work of both translators and interpreters.
  3. Can I see both the forest and the trees?
Meticulous attention to detail is essential, and yet a good translator or interpreter can never afford to lose sight of the big picture: the broader context of the message, the target audience, the author's or speaker's intentions, and the client's needs.
