The Jeux de la Francophonie are an international cultural and sporting event in which athletes and artists from Francophone, Anglophone or Allophone countries participate. The Games are held every four years and are hosted only as Summer games. The Sport and Recreation Branch plays the lead role in the preparation of Team New Brunswick. These Games feature more than 40 countries that use French as a common language. The Games distinguish themselves from other similar events in many ways. They are the only major international Games where sports and cultural activities are presented in a comparable competitive context.
New Brunswick, Quebec and Canada each send teams to the games. Branch staff work through team managers and coaches to communicate technical information, provide a Games orientation, make all travel arrangements, provide team clothing, etc.
