2012 is the Bicentennial of the War of 1812

The year 2012 marks two hundred years since the start of the War of 1812, a conflict essentially between the British colonial power in North America and the fledgling United States of America. It had only been three decades since the Americans had fought for their independence from British rule. How important was the War of 1812 in Canadian and New Brunswick history? It has been suggested that this was the beginning of the move to confederation since for the first time several British colonies combined their efforts to fight a common enemy. Bicentennial ceremonies marking this event may be more prominent in Ontario and Quebec (Upper Canada and Lower Canada at the time) where most of the fighting took place, but the War of 1812 did have a significant impact on New Brunswick.

This year, in celebration of our military heritage, we invite you to take another look at the thousands of years of history that surround us here in New Brunswick.

On the right, you will find ways to make connections in your classroom.
