   Which ministry or department is responsible for sport and recreation in the province?

Sport and recreation in the province of New Brunswick falls under the responsibility of the Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport under two branches:

  1. Sport and Recreation
  2. Regional Operations and Community Development

1) The Sport and Recreation Branch supports and gives direction to the growth and improvement of amateur sport and recreation in New Brunswick. The role of the branch in this partnership is one of leadership and includes policy development, program support and coordination, information sharing, dissemination and stimulating growth. The Branch provides financial support, consultative services and program support to sport and recreation organizations, coaches and athletes on a provincial level.

2) The Regional Operations and Community Development Branch, provides leadership and resources to the sport, recreation and physical activity community on a local and regional level. Programs and services are delivered through a network of eight regional offices: Bathurst, Campbellton, Edmundston, Fredericton, Miramichi, Moncton, Saint John, and Woodstock.

   What is the difference between the Regional Operations and Community Development Branch, the Sport and Recreation Branch and Sport NB?

The Regional Operations and Community Development Branch helps to provide leadership and support to those organizations at a local and regional level. The branch works in partnership with such organizations as municipalities, local service districts and regional networks.

The Sport and Recreation Branch provides consultation and support to those organizations with a provincial scope in nature and also works in partnership with the Federal government to introduce national initiatives and negotiate bilateral agreements on behalf of New Brunswick

Sport New Brunswick is a non-profit bilingual federation that counts provincial sport and affiliates as members. Sport NB advocates sport for all, from the grassroots level to high performance, and provide programs and services for members. A portion of its funding is from the Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport.

   What programs and services does the regional office provide?

Regional staff can assist your organization to establish sound administrative polices and procedures for not-for-profit organizations; leverage support from other funding sources; provide training clinics and workshops for volunteer leaders; initiate new innovative programs, establish networks with communities, schools and other agencies for the promotion of physical activity, assist communities in the development of recreational services, promote activities and events, etc

   Is funding available to build a new community playground or soccer field?

While the ROCD Branch works to support community organizations in building their human and program capacity, it is not able to provide direct funding towards the building or renovating of capital assets. The Regional Development Corporation (RDC) have funding available through three (3) different programs your project may qualify for; the Family and Youth Capital Assistance Program, Community Partnership Fund, and the Community Events Program.    How can my sports club/organization qualify for regional funding?

The ROCD Branch through our eight (8) regional offices, awards financial assistance to local and regional recreation and sport organizations who complete a successful application for one of our grant programs. Funding should be directed towards four main areas:

  • Organizational expenses
  • Leadership training
  • Active Living programs and activities
  • Facilities - only applicable to organizations dealing with accessible programming

   What kind of programs do you run for schools to get active and participate in?

  1. GO NB -in partnership with a sports or community based organization
  2. School Communities in ACTION
  3. School Pedometer Challenge

1) GO NB

Go NB is a grant program resulting from the Bilateral Agreement to Advance Sport Participation between the Government of New Brunswick (Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport) and the Government of Canada (Sport Canada). Its purpose is to provide funding to support partnerships among NB sport and recreation organizations, schools and youth organizations, and communities. The aim is to offer successful "Learn To" / Introductory sport participation* programs and initiatives for school-aged children and youth.

2) School Communities in ACTION

Designed to assist schools to adopt, implement and maintain a variety of physical activity opportunities and recognize and reward those schools making a difference in their New Brunswick communities. The program is intended to support additional physical activity programs beyond Physical Education classes.

3) School Pedometer Challenge

Designed to educate and motivate school aged children, youth and their school staff regarding the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle and encourage students to monitor their own physical activity at school and at home, through the use of pedometers.

   What kind of programs do you run for organizations in our community to get active and participate in?

  1. Active Communities Grant Program
  2. Go NB

1) Active Communities Grant Program

Provides support for activities and projects that brings together partners within a community to raise awareness of the importance and enjoyment of physical activity and provide new or expanded opportunities for New Brunswickers to be active. Projects that address barriers for under-represented populations, will receive increased consideration (eg. Indigenous populations, persons with a disability, women and girls, etc).

Types of expenditures that are eligible include: training for leaders, promotion and awareness, preparations and distribution of educational materials, workshops, networking, program creation, delivery costs, equipment needed for program, etc.
