Grant program to support healthy food options in Recreation Facilities

Recreation facilities can now apply for funding to assist with costs associated with offering healthier food choices.

The new program is one of several initiatives designed to increase awareness about wellness, and create supportive environments for New Brunswickers to make healthier choices, including changing eating habits and making better choices more often.

While research has demonstrated that there is a growing group of consumers who are looking for healthier foods, the typical foods found in these settings are high in fat, sugar and sodium. These types of food, if part of a daily diet, are linked to increased obesity rates and the increasing rates of diabetes and other chronic illnesses.

Grants of $500 are available. The funds can be put toward enlisting the help of a dietitian; purchasing equipment for preparing and storing healthy foods; purchasing foods or beverages to test customer interest; and printing promotional materials meant to encourage the new healthy options that are available.

With the help of the Healthy Foods in Recreational Facilities toolkit and a little funding support, Recreational Facilities can take a positive step, re-evaluate their menu choices and start offering better food and beverages to their customers.

Recreational facilities are often the cornerstone of many communities. They are home to some of the largest populations of youth outside the school setting. They are also important gathering places for parents and older adults. Recreational facilities already play a vital role in keeping New Brunswickers healthy by providing safe, public spaces for physical activity. When healthy food options are also available at these facilities, it can have a strong impact on the health of the community.

The goal of this kit is to provide awareness, education and resources to encourage a greater availability of healthy food choices in New Brunswick's recreational facilities. Recreational facilities may include arenas, swimming pools, youth centres, community centres, curling rinks, bowling alleys, skate parks and many other venues.
