Aquariums
Aquarium et Centre Marin

Originally designed as a closed-circuit aquarium with a capacity of 13 litres/minute (water recirculation), major modifications introduced from the very start of its operations have transformed it into an open and closed circuit aquarium with a capacity of 1150 litres/minute. As it is one of the few aquariums to use seawater as opposed to certain other aquariums that make their saltwater from freshwater, the Aquarium and Marine Centre obtains its water from the Shippagan harbour.

The tanks used for exhibit purposes number 31 (21 large and 10 small), totalling 90,000 litres of saltwater and 50,000 litres of freshwater. In addition, there is an outdoor tank with a capacity of 114,000 litres for the harbour seals, and a touch tank is set up outside as well during the tourist season.

Also, more than 150 tanks of various sizes are set up at the Centre for the reserve collection and for the different research projects, some of which use saltwater, and others, freshwater.
