Seals
Aquarium et Centre Marin

At the Aquarium and Marine Centre, you will have the chance to enjoy the antics of some harbour seals (Phoca vitulina). You might want to plan on being there for feeding time. The seals are fed twice daily, at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. You can also attend a presentation on the biology of harbour seals.

But what does this marine species actually eat? It's quite simple, really: herring, herring, and more herring (Clupea harengus harengus). What could be more entertaining than to watch these adorable seals bolt down their food in a single gulp, not even bothering to chew, as proper etiquette would have it!

Each seal gets around 3 to 4 kilos of herring a day, although this varies depending on the season. In summer, seals eat less than in winter, when they have higher energy requirements because of the icy cold.

The harbour seal is a marine species that breeds well in captivity. Since the opening of the Aquarium and Marine Centre, there have been several births. The seals are kept in an outdoor tank with a capacity of 114,000 litres of filtered sea water and a flow of 500 litres per minute in an open-circuit system.

The seals stay outside year-round. In the winter, sometimes a layer of ice forms on the surface, but the seals keep a hole open so they can come to the surface to breathe.
