The Aquarium and Marine Centre lighthouse vas built in 1906 on Portage Island, at the entrance of the Miramichi River, exactly four miles from the coast of the village of Burnt Church. The Aquarium and Marine centre acquired it in 1986 with the idea to dismount and rebuild it as it was on the premises of the aquarium. It was therefore necessary to dismount it piece by piece, transport it by boat to Burnt Church and then to the Shippagan Aquarium and Marine Centre. After its construction in 1906, this lighthouse was equipped with a kerosene lamp until the fifties, after which a battery-powered electric lamp was installed. Twelve and a half meters in height (43 feet), it counts four floors, of which three are made of woods, and a cast iron cupola. This lighthouse always had a keeper until 1960, but after the arrival of modern equipment, it was no longer necessary. According to documents collected, we know that the first keeper of this lighthouse was Peter Morrisson, then in the thirties it was Thomas LeBreton and that Venance Savoy was the last to guard this beautiful structure. The Aquarium and Marine Centre was not allowed to maintain the lamp for navigation purposes but it's almost still as it stood on Portage Island in 1906. This lighthouse, which is installed on the terrace, largely enhances the external activities of the Aquarium and Marine Centre during the tourism season. It is significant to underline the valuable collaboration of Mr. Donald Boudreau, of the Acadian Historical Village, for his considerable experience in restoration work and for his leadership in this project. An official opening took place with the June 1986 tourism season launch. |
