About Community Safety & Crime Prevention Week
Information
What is crime prevention?
Crime prevention is a lot of things you might not think of; it’s more than
just locks, alarms and keeping an eye open for suspicious characters. Each
of us is involved in crime prevention activities in our daily lives. Reaching
out to new neighbours, making them feel like they belong; mentoring children
and youth or acting as good role models as community volunteers; coaching
recreational sports teams; helping seniors living nearby
by shovelling their walk or keeping their lawn mowed. All these activities
contribute to making our communities safe and healthy.
What is New Brunswick Community Safety and Crime Prevention Week?
The Department of Public Safety annually coordinates the Community Safety
and Crime Prevention Week Campaign to:
- inform the public of the multitude of community safety and crime prevention
programs that are available;
- raise awareness about the root causes of crime and how to prevent it;
and
- to promote and recognize the significant efforts made each year by police
forces, individuals, community agencies and all levels of government to
prevent crime.
When is it held?
CSCP Week has traditionally been the first full week in November. This
year, in collaboration with the Atlantic Provinces, it will take place from
November 1st to 7th.
How did it get started?
In the early 1980's, the New Brunswick Police Commission created NB Crime
Prevention Week. In 1983, Canada's Solicitor General joined in and began
a campaign that observed November 1st to 7th as National Crime Prevention
Week. Activities fell dormant in 1987 until 1995, when the former provincial
Department of the Solicitor General revitalized the week in collaboration
with the newly formed Crime Prevention Association of New Brunswick.
How is it promoted?
Through an annual campaign involving the media, police, and community partners,
and by the release of promotional materials through schools, communities
and other organizations.
Safe Communities is everyone’s business?
Traditionally, our partners have included government, police, schools, the Crime Prevention
Association of New Brunswick and New Brunswick's Block Parent Association, but everyone has a
role to play including businesses, communities, and non-profit organizations working with
children, youth, families and seniors. It is our aim to recognize and reinforce everyone's
important roles in preventing crime. Read on for more ideas.
