Public Safety Minister Wayne Steeves recently presented the President of the New Brunswick Command of the Royal Canadian Legion Tom Eagles with a special veterans licence plate. The plate will form part of the display of Canadian province's veterans plates at the national headquarters of the Royal Canadian Legion in Ottawa.
The New Brunswick veterans plate displays the poppy to the left of the number portion of the plate and has the words veteran-ancien combattant written across the bottom. The Department of Public Safety worked with the Legion to design and plan for the implementation of the special plate.
Premier Bernard Lord announced the introduction of the veterans plate in 2003 after receiving a request from the New Brunswick Command of the Royal Canadian Legion. At that time he said, "The introduction of this license plate is another way for the province to show its respect and appreciation to the veterans who have served, or continue to serve, our country," said Premier Lord. "Whether they have served in times of war, or as peace keepers, our veterans have displayed bravery and courage and have sacrificed a great deal to ensure the safety of Canadians and citizens of other countries. They deserve our honour and our recognition. I am proud to offer both with this license plate."
The first veteran's plates were issued in November of 2003.
Applications for the veterans plate are approved by the New Brunswick Command of the Royal Canadian Legion. Veterans who want one of the plates should pick up an application form at a Service New Brunswick office. Once it has been completed, it should be sent to the New Brunswick Command of the Royal Canadian Legion. The Legion will authorize the application according to their records and return it to the veteran. The veteran should then take the approved form to any Service New Brunswick office, where the licence plate will be issued.
