Diesel Vehicle Fuel Rebate Program

General Information

Effective midnight October 3, 2006, Government reduced gasoline tax by 3.8 cents per litre. This rebate program is designed to provide an equivalent relief to owners of certain classes of diesel vehicles. The relief will be in the form of an annual rebate of $40 to registered owners of diesel-powered vehicles classed as passenger or light commercial.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the program take effect?

The program is effective retroactive to midnight October 3, 2006, when the gasoline tax was reduced by Government. It applies to any diesel-powered vehicle classed as passenger or light commercial that was registered or renewed on October 4, 2006 or after that date. The first cheques will be sent to owners in early April.

How often is the rebate for each vehicle issued?

  • One rebate cheque is issued for a vehicle each year
  • A listing of qualifying vehicles and their owners is generated on a monthly basis, and a rebate cheque issued for each vehicle.

What types of vehicles qualify for the rebate?

  • Vehicles carrying a licence plate identified as regular passenger, light commercial, personalized, amputee, firefighter, veteran, antique, conservation and amateur radio qualify, as these licence plate types are issued to light trucks and passenger type vehicles.
  • The vehicle must be powered by diesel.
  • Only validly registered vehicles are included in the program.

What types of vehicles do not qualify?

Heavy commercial vehicles, off-road vehicles, motorcycles, farm-plated vehicles, prorated vehicles, trailers, etc.

Are there any restrictions regarding my vehicle?

  • The registration of the vehicle cannot be suspended.
  • The vehicle must be validly registered.
  • The vehicle cannot be designated as Salvage or Non-repairable.
  • The qualifying vehicle owner must have a valid New Brunswick address on the vehicle registration

Do I have to apply for the rebate?

No application is necessary to receive the rebate. Based on motor vehicle registration information, owners of qualifying vehicles will automatically receive the rebate in the month following the month in which the vehicle is originally registered or the registration is renewed.

How is my vehicle selected to receive the rebate?

The vehicle must have been registered or renewed in New Brunswick within the previous calendar month, and can not have been registered or renewed previously within the previous twelve calendar months.

Who receives the rebate?

  • Individuals and companies are eligible for the rebate
  • The registered owner of the eligible vehicle on the date that the monthly vehicle listing is generated will be the owner who receives the annual rebate. If a vehicle registration is renewed and then sold, the registered owner on the date the list of qualifying vehicle owners is generated will receive the rebate.
  • If a vehicle is registered to co-owners, the rebate cheque will be written to include all co-owners.
  • Leased vehicles:
  1. If the vehicle is registered to a lessor and a lessee, the lessee qualifies for the rebate and the cheque will be written to the lessee.
  2. If the vehicle is leased to multiple lessees, the cheque will be written to include each lessee name along with the appropriate address.
  3. If the vehicle is registered to the leasing company only, the leasing company qualifies for the rebate. A cheque will be prepared in favour of the leasing company.

Are vehicle owners or lessees residing outside New Brunswick eligible for the rebate?

To be eligible to receive the rebate the selected owner or lessees must have a valid postal code registered on the system that begins with "E", to ensure the owner resides in New Brunswick.
