Services Available for Victims of Crime

If you are a victim of crime and have a need for the following services, please contact the Victim Services Office nearest you.
Counselling
Trauma Counselling- usually begins shortly after the crime and is available to assist you to be able to give evidence in court.
Short Term Counselling- the purpose of short term counselling is to help you deal with the emotional effects of being a victim of crime so you can move forward. It is a benefit under the Compensation for Victims of Crime Program.
Compensation
If you have suffered personal injuries or losses as a direct result of a crime, you may be eligible for benefits under the Compensation for Victims of Crime Program.
Court Preparation and Support
Victim Services can help prepare you for going to court. They can explain what happens in court, the roles and responsibilities of various people involved in the court process and help you understand what is expected of you when you testify. They can also arrange tours of the court room and help identify any special needs you may have.
Help in completing a Victim Impact Statement
A Victim Impact Statement is a written description that you prepare for the court, which explains in your own words the effects the crime had in you.
Follow-up services after the Court process
Victim Services can provide you with several follow up services after the court process such as providing information on sentencing outcomes and what it means to you as a victim. Victim Services can also explain your options for getting information on offenders sentenced to incarceration or accused found not criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder.
