  Blight-Alert Network Third Year Report

Guy Bernard1, Dr. Lien Chow2 and Alexander Perley3

Abstract : A Blight-Alert network consisting of a total of 33 weather stations was established in the province during the month of June 1997. Growers were able to learn about the relative danger of infection and Late Blight incidence in their region through daily broadcast on local radio stations or by dialling a toll-free telephone line. Messages were updated daily, six days per week. There were 1001 enquiries on our toll-free line during the 1997 season. This information allowed potato producers to make informed decisions regarding spray schedules and disease prevention. In spite of favourable conditions for disease dissemination, there were few losses to Late Blight in 1997.
