Abstract: Proper liming and fertility management may increase the content of legume species in naturalized forage stands, thus improving productivity and forage quality. This study evaluates how lime treatments affect soil pH profile, species composition, and herbage yield of unimproved forage stands. The first trial, established on an existing naturalized pasture at the Nappan Research Farm, included various combinations of the following five soil amendments: fertilizer, conventional lime, "Hydra-lime Plus," "Micro-K" fertilizer mixture, and a control treatment with no soil amendment. The second trial, established on New Brunswick farm sites, included four soil amendments: fall conventional lime, spring conventional lime, "Hydra-lime Plus," and a control treatment with no soil amendment. Positive response to surface lime application was observed as early as a few months after liming and persisted for two full years. Based on the factors measured in both trials, "Hydra-lime Plus" offered no additional benefits. However, "Hydra-lime Plus" was as effective as conventional lime in improving soil pH and herbage yield, which was evident as early as the first growing season after treatment application. Lime effects were not enhanced significantly by fertilizer applications in this study. In both trials, the effect of surface liming appeared to diminish in the fall of 2000, indicating that surface lime should be applied at least once every two years to maintain higher levels of soil pH.
