Abstract: Mesotrione may offer significant weed control within cranberry
production. A trial was established near Saint Charles, New Brunswick, to
evaluate mesotrione application rates, timings and repeated applications on
sedge (Cyperaceae) species. No crop injury or yield reductions were noted for
any of the treatments evaluated. Weed pressure and control levels were
variable, making conclusions difficult. No consistent difference was noted
between the 50 and 100 g active ingredient/ha application rates or the
application timings. Repeated applications tended to improve weed control,
especially for early and late season evaluations, but were not consistently
significant. This work should be repeated in other areas and, for other weed
species, to fully understand the potential of mesotrione for cranberry
production.
