Grand Manan Island - Flowers

image On Grand Manan fields of lush wild flowers burst into bloom along the shores. Nurtured by seacoast air, more than 300 species of flora burst into rich and vibrant colors. The marvelous variety is due to a diversity of habitats. While traditional meadow flowers, such as lupins and buttercups, bloom in abundance, there are also many rare species such as wild orchids in the island bogs.

Most important to the preservation of these species is the respect of islanders. The area has remained free of pesticides. While vases of wildflowers grace many island dinner tables, over-picking is frowned upon.

imageFrom late spring to early autumn, the island is in constant bloom. Many of the species have been photographed and can be seen on display at the Grand Manan Museum. Lectures on the flora of Grand Manan are often given throughout the season.
