FREDERICTON (CNB) - March 11-17 is being observed as Canadian Agricultural Safety Week, which launches the year-long Canadian agricultural safety campaign.

This year's campaign emphasizes the proper use, fit and access of personal protective equipment (PPE) in agriculture. Accordingly, the theme this year is, PPE only works if you use it!

"It is important for our producers to anticipate safety risks prior to starting the job and to be proactive and correct any identified hazards," said Agriculture and Aquaculture Minister Ronald Ouellette. "The objective of the campaign is to encourage our producers to improve safety practices within their operations and to choose the most appropriate protective equipment."

The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) has produced several fact sheets and posters to help producers choose and use hearing and respiratory protective equipment. These materials provide diagrams and instructions.

"Farm safety should be a priority throughout the year because any incorrect or unsafe practices may have serious consequences on the personal health and the financial health of the farm business," said Ouellette.

CASA is delivering the program in partnership with Farm Credit Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The New Brunswick Agricultural Alliance is a strong advocate of on-farm safety and actively supports the Canadian agricultural safety campaign.
