FREDERICTON (CNB) - Sustainable development in the province's fisheries and aquaculture industries will be the topic of Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet's speech at the 2009 Global Outlook for Aquaculture Leadership (GOAL) conference being held in Seattle, Wash., from Oct. 27-30.

"It is exciting that we have been invited to talk to hundreds of seafood and aquaculture leaders around the world about the exciting things happening in New Brunswick's fisheries and aquaculture industries," said Doucet. "We have not only talked about the importance of sustainability for the future of our industries, we have put words into action. From the Atlantic Lobster Sustainability Foundation to our province's fish health management and research capacity, the world is interested in what we are doing here in New Brunswick."

GOAL 2009 is a leadership forum for sustainable aquaculture where aquaculture policy, practices, production and market outlooks are analyzed and debated. The forum is organized by Global Aquaculture Alliance, the leading aquaculture standards-setting organization.

"There are many examples of productive and innovative developments in the aquaculture and fisheries sectors in New Brunswick," said Minister of Agriculture and Aquaculture Ronald Ouellette. "New Brunswick has been invited to participate in this conference because of our international reputation for developing policies and programs that support industries recognized for their environmentally responsible practices and sustainable approach to development."
