Top honours were awarded to Nackawic High School and École L'Odysée of Moncton

Developed by Alcool NB Liquor, the program was open to all New Brunswick high schools and alternative education sites, and offered students the opportunity to create and deliver a message about making responsible choices when celebrating high school graduation.

"All the submissions are very high quality," said Education Minister Kelly Lamrock. "It is wonderful to see all the creative and innovative ways that the students came up with to encourage their peers to be safe."

According to the 2007 New Brunswick Drug Use Survey, 50 per cent of students reported drinking alcohol at least once during the 12 months prior to the survey, while 26 per cent consumed alcohol more than once per month.

The study also noted that alcohol consumption increased by grade level, with 79 per cent of Grade 12 students reporting drinking alcohol at least once during the previous 12 months.

Finance Minister Victor Boudreau, minister responsible for Alcool NB Liquor, was impressed by the interest generated by the contest.

"We are very pleased with the number of submissions received," said Boudreau. "It shows that many young people today recognize the importance of safe graduations. We applaud Alcool NB Liquor for its initiative, and are pleased that so many young New Brunswickers will be safe and sound as they celebrate their graduation, and start this next important chapter in their lives."

Schools were required to present submissions in a video, brochure, poster, PowerPoint or song format. The submissions had to convey appropriate messaging associated with teens and high school graduation celebrations. Each school was eligible to receive a cash prize to be used toward 2009 Safe Grad celebrations.

The following 14 schools received donations to their Safe Grad activities: Nackawic High School, École L'Odysée, Polyvalente Thomas-Albert, Blackville High School, L'École Mathieu-Martin, École Marie Gaétane, Polyvalente W.-A.-Losier, Sugarloaf High School, Cité des Jeunes A.-M.-Sormany, Leo Hayes High School, Sussex Regional High School, North and South Esk Regional High School, Polyvalente Aux Quatre Vents, and Riverview High School.
