FREDERICTON (CNB) - Four New Brunswick companies were recognized for their outstanding achievements in the area of trade and exporting at a ceremony in Fredericton on Wednesday, May 23.

Business New Brunswick Minister Greg Byrne and Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) president and CEO Perrin Beatty presented Export Achievement Awards to Hachey Construction & Fabrication Ltd., LuminUltra Technologies Ltd., Professional Quality Assurance Ltd. (PQA), and Neill and Gunter. The awards are part of CME's annual general meeting and Manufacturing Days events.

"These awards highlight the important role New Brunswick exporters play in making New Brunswick the most trade active province in Canada," Byrne said. "New Brunswick exports as much as the other three Atlantic provinces combined, and export figures are up seven per cent in the first quarter of 2007. The companies recognized last night have shown the foresight to compete in the global marketplace. The manufacturing sector is vital in helping us reach our goal of self-sufficiency by 2026."

"Trade with other countries has been the cornerstone of New Brunswick's economy for centuries,"said Jim Simmons, chairman of CME's New Brunswick division and senior director of R&D for Imperial Manufacturing Group. "Today, changes in the global economy are presenting new realities for provincial manufacturers and exporters. Our future depends on taking a 'can-do' attitude in dealing in the international marketplace."

First presented in 1967, the Export Achievement Awards are a joint initiative of the CME and the Government of New Brunswick.
