FREDERICTON (CNB) - The provincial government is helping West-Wood Manufacturing Ltd. expand its sawmill in Lakeburn, Business New Brunswick Minister Greg Byrne announced today.

"Our government is committed to economic development and to helping the manufacturing sector maintain competitiveness and productivity in this challenging economic climate," said Byrne. "We are proud to assist in West-Wood's project so that it can continue to support its partner operation in Scoudouc."

The government is providing the company with a $500,000 direct repayable loan, and a $500,000 loan guarantee.

The investment will maintain 30 full-time jobs at the company's sawmill, with the potential to create five more positions. The assistance will also help the company expand and convert the facility from a spruce-dimension lumber mill to an eastern white pine sawmill. This change will provide the right mix of grade and size of pine required to manufacture windows and doors at West-Wood's Scoudouc operation.

"We are very excited about the changes about to take place at our mill in Lakeburn," said company president Léandre Cormier. "We are also happy to partner with the provincial government to finance this expansion and help maintain the 30 positions at the Lakeburn mill, along with the more than 200 jobs at our Scoudouc site."

West-Wood Industries Ltd. acquired the vacant Lockwood Windows plant in December 1996. In 1998, the company reopened the window and door manufacturing division, under the brand name Norwood. The Lakeburn sawmill provides the raw materials to manufacture value-added wood products in Scoudouc.

"West-Wood has made quality wood products for over a decade, and I'm confident that the impending changes will only further their success," said Byrne. "Mr. Cormier and his team are committed to this region and to the province, and West-Wood's continued growth will certainly help stimulate economic development in New Brunswick's southeast."
