FREDERICTON (CNB) - Twenty new engineering researchers will be hired at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) by Fantastic North America, thanks to help from Business New Brunswick.

"We are pleased and proud to be part of a project that will result in the commercialization of research now being done at UNB," said Business New Brunswick Minister Victor Boudreau. "This new partnership holds enormous potential for the university, the company and the innovative R&D work happening at all levels in New Brunswick."

Fantastic North America, a newly formed New Brunswick-based subsidiary of U.S.-based Fantastic Network Solutions, has signed an agreement with UNB to collaborate on the research and development of information and communications technologies projects. The company intends to hire 20 hardware and software engineers to conduct research with the engineering and computer science faculties on the UNB Fredericton campus, and will collaborate to commercialize several technologies developed and patented by UNB.

Fantastic Network solutions CEO Dennis O'Leary said that his company intends to find commercial applications for those patents.

"We have pending contracts that can use this technology, and we hope this is just the start of a much bigger project for our company and for New Brunswick," O'Leary said. "We appreciate the support and encouragement we have received from investment staff at Business New Brunswick. Their work during the last 12 months has paid off with the creation of our new company and our decision to hire this substantial research team in Fredericton."

Greg Kealey, vice-president of research and provost at UNB said that partnerships such as this are what allow research and development to thrive at universities.

"UNB conducts over 75 per cent of New Brunswick's university research, and is constantly seeking commercial outcomes for the research we do" said Kealey. "This would not be possible without the collaboration and support of our partners."
