Feb. 16, 2009

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Nominations for the March 9 byelection in the provincial riding of Restigouche-La-Vallée will close at 2 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 20.

Nomination papers may be picked up at either the Kedgwick or Sainte-Anne-de Madawaska returning offices (107 St-Jean-Baptiste St. in Kedgwick or 111 Martin Rd. in Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska). They may also be printed from the Elections New Brunswick website, www.electionsnb.ca.

While candidates may have been named by some of the political parties, and may be campaigning already, they do not become official candidates until they file nomination papers with the returning officer, along with a $100 deposit.

There are four registered political parties in New Brunswick (Liberal, Progressive Conservative, New Democratic and Parti Vert N.B. Green). Candidates may also run as independents.

Elections New Brunswick is accepting the names and resumes of individuals interested in working during the election. Applications may be dropped off at the Kedgwick or Sainte-Anne-de Madawaska returning offices; faxed to 506-284-3497 in Kedgwick or to 506-445-6256 in Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska; or completed online.

The government and opposition political parties submit names of possible workers to the returning officer. Interested persons may call the parties' campaign offices to have their names placed on the lists being compiled for the byelection.
