NB 402

March 23, 2010

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Byelections to fill vacancies in 14 municipalities and a plebiscite on Campobello Island will take place on Monday, May 10. Seventeen positions are unoccupied: the position of mayor in Riverside-Albert and 16 councillors-at-large.

"These positions provide an excellent opportunity for residents to have a say and influence decisions that can positively impact the community where they live," said Michael Quinn, municipal electoral officer of New Brunswick.

Municipalities with council vacancies are Alma, Grande-Anse, Maisonnette (two vacancies), McAdam, Nackawic, Port Elgin, Petitcodiac, Riverside-Albert (two vacancies), St. Andrews (two vacancies), Sussex, Sussex Corner, St. George, Saint-Hilaire and Tracadie-Sheila. Nominations close at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 16.

In the Campobello Island plebiscite, residents will vote on whether they want to replace the existing local service district with a rural community, which would have an elected council and powers to make decisions in certain areas.
