Advance polling for municipal byelections, plebiscite (10/04/29)

NB 640

April 29, 2010

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Advance polling will take place this Saturday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. as part of byelections to fill vacant council positions in nine municipalities.

There are vacancies for councillors-at-large in McAdam, Nackawic, Petitcodiac, Port Elgin, St. Andrews, St. George, Saint-Hilaire and Tracadie-Sheila. Voters in Riverside-Albert will cast ballots to elect a new mayor.

An advance poll will be held on Campobello Island as part of a plebiscite to determine if voters there wish to replace the existing local service district with a rural community that would have an elected council.

Voter information cards with the locations of advance and regular polling stations were sent out in the mail this past week. Voters are encouraged to bring them to their polling stations.

"The voter information cards are not required for a person to vote," said Michael Quinn, chief electoral officer. "But having the card with you will make it easier for our workers at the polls to process you and speed up the voting process."

Regular polling day is Monday, May 10. Voters may contact the returning office in their area to arrange to vote by special ballot. For more information, visit www.electionsnb.ca or call 1-888-858-VOTE.
