WHITEHORSE (CNB) – New Brunswick speed skaters won two bronze medals Thursday evening during competitions at the Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon.
The female and male 3,000 m relay team each finished third during final races of the games to win the seventh and eight Team New Brunswick Medals in the first week of competitions.
Skaters Samia Gould (Shédiac), Nikki LeBlanc (Dieppe), Elizabeth Russell (Fredericton), Jana Bubar (Burtts Corner) and Mary Jane Roper won bronze by finishing third in the final of the 3,000 m relay. The male skaters did the same. They had finished 4th, but BC was disqualified and NB took third spot. The team was composed of Matthew Cole (Fredericton), Reid van Drecht (Fredericton), Mikel Widdershoven (Hampton), Chae Young Lim (Saint John) and Brendan Fenerty (Fredericton).
In the female 1000 m, Jana Bubar was 12th, Nikki LeBlanc 18th, Samia Gould 25th, Mary-Jane Roper 26th and Elizabeth Russell 32th. In the male 1,000 m, Reid van Drecht was 12th, Matthew Cole 15th, Mikel Widdershoven 17th, Chae Young Lim 19th and Brendan Fenerty 29th.
In team synchronized swimming, New Brunswick was 6th overall in final team competitions. Taking part were Tracy Glassford (Fredericton), Melinda Jacobs (Fredericton), Erin MacDougall (Fredericton), Julie MacFarlane (Fredericton), Jenifer O’Blenes (Hampton), Laura Rankin (Fredericton), Kate Stymiest (Fredericton) and Kaitlyn Willis (Fredericton).
In men’s hockey, Saskatchewan beat New Brunswick 9-5 in the round robin for 5th to 8th position. NB plays Nova Scotia Friday and needs a win to finish 5th in the final standings.
Patrice Cormier had two goals for NB who trailed Saskatchewan 8-4 after two periods of play. Rémi Blanchard, Devon MacAusland and Kelsey Tessier were the other markers. Saskatchewan led 60-53 in shots on goal.
