Babineau won the gold medal in men's boxing over 48 kg and not exceeding 51 kg weight class at the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse Yukon last winter. The Richibucto-Village native also captained the Team NB boxing team, and was chosen to proudly lead Team NB at the Games closing ceremonies as the New Brunswick flag bearer.

"I would like to congratulate all of Team NB's athletes on their excellent performance at the 2007 Canada Games in Whitehorse," Graham said. "It is fitting that Dominic Babineau was chosen for this honour, as his performance at these past Games exemplified those qualities that the Roly McLenahan Award honours: excellence in sport, perseverance and sportsmanship."

"Dominic Babineau is truly deserving of the Roly McLenehan Award this year," said Sport New Brunswick president Laura Swift Christie. "His performance at the 2007 Canada Games in Whitehorse was inspirational for all members of Team NB, and his dedication to excellence is a shining example to other athletes who are striving to be the best in their chosen sport."

Babineau was selected for the Roly McLenahan Award by a committee assembled by the Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport and Sport New Brunswick, based on nominations by athletes, coaches, managers and mission staff members who participated in the 2007 Canada Games.

The Roly McLenahan Award was created in 1985 to honour the memory of its namesake and to recognize the New Brunswick Canada Games athlete or team who best combines excellence in sport, perseverance and sportsmanship, and who has made a significant contribution to the New Brunswick team effort at the Canada Games.

Roly McLenahan achieved notable records in both amateur and professional sport. He became the first director of Sport in New Brunswick in 1961, and remained in that position for 23 years. He was inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1982 for his athletic prowess as a hockey player. An original member of the Canada Games Council, he was committed to youth and their participation in sport.

The award will be presented to Babineau during the annual Sport NB Pitney Bowes Sports Awards Banquet, taking place Nov. 17 in Fredericton.
