MONCTON (CNB) – Beresford wrestler Jean-François Godin wil be Team New Brunswick flag bearer for the official opening ceremonies of the 2009 Canada Summer Games in Summerside, PEI, on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Credit Union Place.
A Grade 12 student at École secondaire Népisiguit, Godin earned his first national title in the 42-kg weight class when he was 15-years-old at the Canadian Cadet Wrestling Championships in Whitby, Ont. in 2007. At the 2009 Canadian Junior Wrestling Championships in Regina, Sask., he competed against university-aged wrestlers and finished third in freestyle and second in Greco Roman style wrestling.
He is the 2009 juvenile and cadet nationals gold medal winner in Greco Roman and bronze in freestyle. He is the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association (NBIAA) champion in his weight class this year and was named a winner of the William Ritchie NBIAA sportsmanship award from all boys playing high school sports at the AAA level in New Brunswick. In July, he won the juvenile men's 54-kg division at the Canada Cup meet in Guelph, Ont.
