SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. (CNB) – Team New Brunswick athletes won three medals Friday in Canada Games competitions in Summerside, Prince Edward Island.
Wrestler Jean-François Godin, of Beresford, won a silver medal while wrestler Corey Boudreau, of Moncton, and the 8-men with cox rowing team won bronze medals. NB has four medals after the first week of competitions.
"I am happy with by match,' said Godin following his defeat in the gold medal match. "I would have loved winning the gold for the province, but my opponent had the same style as mine and I was not able to find a way to get at him. I give it all I had and I had wrestled him on Thursday also. He won the match and I am happy with the silver medal."
Boudreau was all smiles after his victory in the bronze medal match up. "I feel very good having won his medal," said Boudreau. ‘I worked hard all summer long and this is my reward. He tried to roll me, but I stood my ground on my feet and I lifted his elbow to surprise him and pin him to win the match. I am happy with my medal after only two years in the sport."
Coach Jeff Jones said the team met its objective with two medals. "We would have loved to win more as we had five wrestler s in the finals, but we finished fourth overall as a team, the best finish ever for NB in men's wrestling. We are very happy with the results."
Rob Alexander said the 8-men team rowed hard to win the medal. "It was a very hard fought race and we rowed hard till the end because the Québec boat was right behind us. The 8 rowers all worked together for this medal. We saw that the other NB boats did not medal and we give it all we had. The hard work of the three or four years paid off."
The members of the rowing team are Nicole Sansfaçon as cox, Cameron Reid, Greg Thériault, Mike Craig, Keegan Drummond, Robin Overing, Taylor Overing, Simon Gagnon and Rob Alexander.
