FREDERICTON (CNB) -- Public Libraries Week will be celebrated Oct. 15 - 21, Premier Bernard Lord announced today.
"Libraries are places of opportunity for all," Lord said in signing the proclamation. "I encourage all New Brunswickers to visit their public library during Public Libraries Week and throughout the year."

The premier said anyone who has not been to a library recently might be surprised by what they will find.
"Our public libraries have changed to meet the needs of today's users," he said. "In addition to books, newspapers and magazines, visitors will also find CDs, videos, Web access, data bases and other resources to fill their information needs."
Last year, Public Libraries Week introduced the new provincial library card to New Brunswickers. This year's campaign aims to showcase public libraries as a powerful information resource. That's why the 2001 slogan is 'Get information smart @ your library / Ouvrez vos horizons @ votre bibliothèque". The slogan is part of an international campaign developed by the American Library Association and supported by library organizations throughout Canada and the world.
Education Minister Dennis Furlong highlighted the role public libraries play in the future of our children. "Public libraries are the place to go to give your child a head start in life by making reading fun and giving children the tools they need to get information-smart," he said.
New Brunswick joins the provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in celebrating Public Libraries Week, making this the first time the week has been jointly held in the Maritimes. Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec will also mark public libraries week during the month of October.
Special events and activities will be organized in public libraries throughout New Brunswick to commemorate Public Libraries Week.
