FREDERICTON (CNB) -- Fifty-four teachers have been granted paid educational leave for the 2002-2003 school year. The announcement was made today by Education Minister Dennis Furlong and New Brunswick Teachers' Federation co-presidents Mary Wilson and Pierre Paillard.
"Our annual program of paid educational leaves provides interested teachers with the opportunity to receive the upgrading, specialization and professional development that will make them even stronger educators," Furlong said. "I congratulate this year's group of teachers for taking this step to improve their skills."
"We are pleased to be able to support these 54 teachers as they pursue their educational plans in the coming year," Paillard said. "We thank them for their commitment to life-long learning and to their profession."
"Educational leaves are very important to the continuing professional development of our members," Wilson said. "This is one of a number of initiatives supported by the teachers' associations and the Department of Education which allow teachers to stay current in their teaching areas."
Educational leaves vary from four months to a full year and will cost about $1,965,942 in 2002-2003.
Teacher applications for educational leave are reviewed by a committee of representatives from the Department of Education, district superintendents, the New Brunswick Teachers' Association, l'Association des enseignantes et des enseignants francophones du Nouveau-Brunswick and the New Brunswick Teachers' Federation.
