SAINT JOHN (CNB) -- Children of all ages are invited to read their way to success as public libraries across the province invite them to sign up for Ready, Set…READ. The official launch of the summer reading program took place today at the Centre Scolaire-Communautaire Samuel-de-Champlain in Saint John.

"Each summer, New Brunswick public libraries offer a children's reading program to promote a love of books and reading and to encourage young people to visit their public libraries and bookmobiles," Education Minister Dennis Furlong said. "I am very pleased with the program that has been developed for this summer and I hope children throughout the province will add reading to their list of must do summer activities."

Ready, Set…READ is a free, non-competitive reading program that will run during July and August from the 62 public libraries and four bookmobiles of the province. Children who participate will receive their own personal reading logs to record the books they have read and a ribbon highlighting their achievements. Special programs and activities are planned around the theme, and New Brunswick author and illustrator Anne-Marie Sirois will sign the certificates of achievement.

"By participating in the Summer Reading Club, children strengthen their reading skills and expand their horizons," Furlong said. "They also develop relationships with their public library as a place to learn and have fun."

To sign up for Summer Reading Club 2002, visit your local public library or bookmobile.
