FREDERICTON (CNB) - Education Minister Dennis Furlong is inviting New Brunswickers to explore their local library during Public Libraries Week, Oct. 14-20, and discover the exciting range of new and traditional resources available at New Brunswick's 62 public libraries.
"If you haven't been to the public library lately, you owe it to yourself to take a look at us now," Furlong said. "Our resources are such today that not only can we connect you to the vast world of global information, but we have the expertise to help you get there via our print and electronic resources."
Furlong said New Brunswickers have always counted on their public libraries for reading and homework help for their children, for the latest bestsellers for their own recreational reading and for their research and information needs. Now, they can benefit from a variety of services delivered in a whole new way, he said.
For example, the provincial catalogue -- the listing of every item held in every public library across the province -- is now available to library members via the Internet. So too is the Virtual Reference Library, an online list of relevant and easy-to-use Internet links compiled by the staff of the province's public libraries. In addition, in-house public access computers now link directly to reference databases such as the new Virtual News Library, an archive of the four daily newspapers in the province.
"The theme for Public Libraries Week, Explore Your Library @ www.gnb.ca/publiclibraries, was chosen to introduce these new resources to New Brunswickers," said Sylvie Nadeau, executive director of the New Brunswick Public Library Service. "The doors of our libraries are wide open and the welcome mats are out. Also, all 62 of New Brunswick's public libraries will offer special programs over the course of the week to showcase the wealth of resources available to library users."
To learn more about these new resources, and all the services your library has to offer, call your local public library, or visit online at http://www.gnb.ca/publiclibraries.
