EDMUNDSTON (CNB) - New Brunswick children of all ages are invited to sign up for Read in Harmony, the Summer Reading Club organized by the province's public libraries. This program was officially launched today at the Jardins de la République in Edmundston.
"The Summer Reading Club gives children an opportunity to strengthen their reading skills and broaden their horizons," said Sylvie Nadeau, executive director of the New Brunswick Public Library Service. "At the same time, they discover that public libraries and bookmobiles are places to learn and have fun."
Read in Harmony is a free, non-competitive reading program offered by the province's 62 public libraries and four bookmobiles during July and August. Children who participate will receive a reading log to record the books they have read, as well as a bookmark and stickers. Special programs and activities related to the theme are scheduled to take place throughout the summer, and singer/songwriter Roch Voisine, a native of New Brunswick, will sign the certificates of achievement.
The Department of Training and Employment Development is supporting this program by allocating 72 positions for students who will be hired to organize and promote the Summer Reading Club activities at various public libraries.
"Every summer, New Brunswick's public libraries offer a children's reading program to foster a love of books and reading," Nadeau said. "I hope the Summer Reading Club will be very popular with young New Brunswickers again this year."
To sign up for the 2003 Summer Reading Club, visit your local public library or bookmobile.
